KANM - Student Radio
My friend Matt has a radio show called The Rock Bottom, and I sat in on it today. It was a lot of fun, but the whole time I was just thinking about how it could be done better (not really the radio show but everything else).
- The only ways to listen to it are either on the radio or streaming online. They REALLY should offer it in podcast form - where I subscribe in iTunes and everytime a new radio show goes live it downloads and I can listen to it whenever. I don’t know what technology would be involved (in the recording, I could take care of everything else) but someone should look into it.
- The radio station is used for students to discover new music (the DJ’s can’t play anything that’s been in the top 40), but the only way you can find out a song’s name and the band is waiting for the DJ to come on and talk, which he does every two or three songs.
- Their website looks like crap. Enough said.
What would I do? Redesign kanm.tamu.edu and build it off of a wordpress blog. Then set up each DJ with a login to the blog and set it so they can only post in one category (the category would be named whatever their radio show is called, so Matt’s category would be The Rock Bottom). They could then post a list of the songs they’ve played along with any commentary they’d like to add (e.g., the band is playing locally soon). To top it off, make the song names links to the song in iTunes, using the iTunes Affiliate Program. This could earn some money for the radio station to invest in whatever they need to buy to get the podcasts out of each radio show.
One of my friends is in charge of the radio station so I think I’ll mention a few of these ideas to him. Hopefully something will happen.
